Backports service becoming official

More than seven years after I initially started the backports.org project together with Team(ix), my employer at that time, it finally happened: backports.org became official last weekend, and moved to backports.debian.org! Alexander Wirt wrote a blog entry including some technical details, and there is also an official announcement on the debian-announce mailinglist. The most important point from a users perspective is to update your sources.list entry to:

deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports/ lenny-backports main contrib non-free

First backports for lenny available

Alexander Wirt just wrote a mail to our mailinglist to announce that lenny-backports suite is ready for uploads. We will of course continue supporting etch-backports with security updates as long as etch will be supported by the Debian security team.

Exactly 5 years ago, on the 27th May 2003 after a discussion with my former boss and some colleagues, the domain backports.org was registered. I originally planned to write a detailed article about the last 5 years, but unfortunately didn't found the time. I'll try to catch up on this as soon as possible.

Unexpected backports.org downtime

Due to hardware problems with the fibre channel controller and a read-only mounted filesystem as a result, backports.org is currently unavailable. It will last at least until tomorrow morning, just use one of our mirrors in the meanwhile.

Security support for sarge-backports to be terminated

Security support for Debian 3.1 (aka sarge) will be terminated on March 31st this year. We decided to terminate the security support for the sarge backports archive on backports.org at the same time, there will be no more updates after March 31st.
